How to Use Seoul Buses: A First-Ride Guide for Visitors

Use the bus when it solves the final kilometer

Seoul buses reach streets and neighborhoods that can require a long walk from the subway. They are especially useful for hills, routes between adjacent districts, and destinations that sit between rail lines.

The tradeoff is that the correct stop and road direction matter. For a first ride, choose a simple route with no transfer and avoid making an unfamiliar bus the only way to reach a timed reservation.

Identify the exact stop before walking there

Search the destination in Naver Map or another Korean map service and inspect the recommended bus number, boarding stop, stop ID, direction, and stop sequence. Two stops with nearly identical names may be on opposite sides of a wide road.

At the shelter or pole, match the number and stop ID rather than relying only on the English name. Check that the next few stops move toward the destination before boarding.

Know what the bus colors mean

Seoul's official guide describes blue trunk buses as longer city routes, green branch buses as local and subway-connection routes, yellow circulation services, red rapid services linking the metropolitan area, and smaller local buses. Color helps identify the service pattern but does not replace the route number.

Fares and operating patterns can change. Read the current city or operator information for unusual services such as late-night, rapid, or regional buses rather than applying a normal blue-bus assumption.

Board and pay without delaying the door

Prepare the transport card before the bus arrives. Board through the front door and tap the reader once for one passenger. Wait for the confirmation sound or displayed balance before moving into the aisle.

If one card will pay for multiple people, tell the driver the number before tapping. Seoul's official guide notes extra restrictions for multi-passenger transfers, including no subway transfer discount, so separate cards are simpler for most visitors.

Follow the ride and request your stop

Watch the next-stop sequence in the app and on the onboard display. GPS can lag, so compare the stop names and count the remaining stops instead of waiting for the map pin to sit exactly on the destination.

Press a stop button after the preceding stop or when your destination is announced. Move toward the rear door only when safe, hold rails while the bus is moving, and keep luggage out of the aisle and door area.

Tap when you exit

Exit through the rear door and tap the card reader. Seoul's transfer rules require an exit tap, and the next eligible bus or subway boarding must occur within the stated transfer window. The official city guide describes a longer window during designated night hours.

Do not assume every second ride is free: distance, the higher base fare, route type, time window, and same-route restrictions can affect the charge. Treat the card's displayed result as the transaction record.

If you board the wrong direction or miss the stop

Get off at the next safe stop, tap out, and recalculate the route. Do not cross a divided road or large intersection without checking where the opposite-direction stop actually sits.

If the service ends, the route changes, or the app disagrees with the bus display, use the stop information, a staffed subway station, the city information service, or an official taxi fallback. Keep the Korean destination and accommodation address offline.
